Winning The Worlds Toughest Customers

Koukia Pty Ltd | Consensus Software Award Winner 2008

Some customers buy your software.

The very best customers become your biggest advocates.

When Koukia Pty Ltd received a Consensus Software Award in 2008, the company had already established itself as an innovator in one of the world's most demanding industries—the insurance sector.

Insurance companies are notoriously cautious when it comes to technology. Their systems underpin millions of policies, complex regulatory requirements and enormous financial risk. Replacing core software is not a decision taken lightly.

Koukia understood those challenges.

Its flagship platform, InsureJ, was designed to help insurers modernise policy administration and streamline operations with a flexible, enterprise-grade solution built specifically for the insurance industry.

The Consensus Software Awards recognised both the innovation behind the technology and its commercial potential.

That potential quickly attracted international attention.

In 2007, global insurance software provider SSP Worldwide secured the European distribution rights to InsureJ, introducing the Australian-developed platform to insurers across Europe. The software generated strong interest in the market, reinforcing Koukia's reputation as a company developing world-class insurance technology.

Then something remarkable happened.

Rather than simply continuing as a distributor, SSP decided to acquire the business.

In March 2008, SSP Worldwide announced the acquisition of Koukia Pty Ltd, bringing the company's technology, intellectual property, specialist team and more than 50 insurance software professionals into its global organisation. Koukia continued operating as SSP's Asia-Pacific business, providing the international company with an immediate presence and deep expertise in one of the world's fastest-growing insurance technology markets.

For Koukia, the acquisition represented more than a successful exit.

It was validation that software developed in Australia could compete with—and be sought after by—one of the world's leading insurance technology companies.

For Consensus, Koukia is another example of recognising businesses with the vision to solve complex industry challenges and the capability to compete on the global stage.

Its journey offers an important lesson for every entrepreneur.

When you build software that genuinely solves difficult problems for demanding customers, you don't always have to chase international expansion.

Sometimes, the world comes looking for you.
